- First fully forged Milled Grind wedge, made from soft carbon steel
- Saw-milled grooves plus RAW Face Spin Tread for 13% more spin in damp conditions (TaylorMade claim)
- Six sole grinds, including the TW grind based on Tiger Woods' setup
Why it made the cut
The Milled Grind 5 is TaylorMade’s first fully forged Milled Grind wedge, with saw-milled grooves and a treaded face built to hold spin when the grass is wet.
Why it made the list
Earlier Milled Grind wedges were not fully forged. For the fifth version, TaylorMade forged the head from soft carbon steel after its tour staff asked for more feel. It also switched to saw-milled grooves, cut with a new machining process that holds tighter tolerances. The groove walls are steeper and the edges are sharper, which helps the ball grab the face on partial shots.
Golf Digest gave the MG5 a 4.5 score and a Gold medal on its 2026 Hot List, and placed it in the top 5 for performance among high handicappers.
What it does well
- Forged from soft carbon steel for a softer feel and sound at impact
- Uses saw-milled grooves with steeper walls and sharper edges for more grab
- Adds RAW Face Spin Tread that TaylorMade says gives 13% more spin in damp conditions
- Comes in six sole grinds, including the TW grind shaped to Tiger Woods’ preferences
The tread works like the grooves in a tire. Thin channels between the grooves move water away so the face keeps its friction on dewy mornings and after rain. Each sole is shaped by hand and then machine milled, so one wedge matches the next.
Who it’s for
Buy it if you play often in wet or soft conditions and want spin you can count on. It also suits golfers who like a forged feel and a big-brand wedge with lots of sole choices. High handicappers who want a forged wedge can feel good about it, given Golf Digest’s top 5 result in that group.
Who should skip it
Skip it if you want a cavity-back wedge with a larger head. The MG5 has a traditional head with no cavity, unlike the Cleveland CBZ. Skip it too if you want the lowest price, since it sells for $199.99, about $70 more than the Cobra KING on sale.
Key specs, explained
Lofts run from 46° to 60°, with 23 loft and grind options and two finishes, Chrome and Charcoal. The six grinds are LB (low bounce for firm turf and shallow swings), SC (a C grind for all turf), SB (standard bounce with four-way camber), SX (a wide sole with a reverse C trailing edge), HB (high bounce for soft turf and steep swings) and TW. Bounce ranges from 8° to 14°. The stock steel shaft is the True Temper DG Tour Issue 115, with a UST Recoil Dart 80 graphite option. The grip is the Golf Pride Z-Grip Plus 2.
How it compares
The Titleist Vokey Design SM11 Wedge (Tour Chrome) offers more lofts, starting at 44°, and more loft and bounce options. The Callaway Opus SP Chrome Wedge costs the same and has five grinds. Choose the MG5 if wet-weather spin and forged feel matter most to you.
Good to know
The Charcoal finish sells for the same $199.99 at Golf Discount. The two TW grind models cost more, at $219.99. In the 60° lob wedge, the TW grind has more camber and less heel relief than the other grinds. Golf Discount sells right and left hand models.
