MacGregor CG4000 Men’s Package Set with Stand Bag

The MacGregor CG4000 is a 10-club men’s package set with a 460cc driver, an 18-degree fairway wood, a 24-degree hybrid, 6-iron to sand wedge, a putter and a stand bag for $349.99.

Why it made the list

The CG4000 is the lowest-priced full set from an established golf brand on our beginner list. At $349.99 for the graphite and steel version, it covers every part of the game, including a sand wedge, which many sets at this price leave out.

Every club is built to get the ball in the air. Golf Monthly named the CG4000 its Best High Flight set and called it great value with everything you need to start. MacGregor backs the set with a 12-month warranty and 30-day returns.

What it does well

• The 460cc driver has a high MOI head and a bigger sweet spot to help on off-center hits
• The 24-degree hybrid replaces a long iron and launches the ball high from the rough or the fairway
• Cavity-back irons from 6-iron to sand wedge use peripheral weighting for stability on mishits
• The putter has strong alignment aids and a soft face insert
• Three matching headcovers come with the set

The set gives a new player a full bag for the cost of a single premium driver. The driver, fairway wood and hybrid all use graphite shafts, which are light and help slower swings add speed.

Who it’s for

The CG4000 suits men who are trying golf for the first time and want to keep the cost low. It is a good fit for golfers who play now and then, students, and anyone buying a first set as a gift. It also makes sense as a second set to keep at a vacation home.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you already play often and want clubs that feel premium. Golfers who want a choice of flex or length should look at the MacBLK, which offers both. If you want a gap wedge between the pitching wedge and the sand wedge, you will need to buy one separately.

Key specs, explained

The 18-degree fairway wood has more loft than a typical 3-wood, which makes it easier to launch from the turf. The 24-degree hybrid sits where a 4 or 5-iron would go in an older set. MOI is a measure of how much a clubhead resists twisting. A high MOI head keeps more speed and a straighter path when you miss the center of the face.

The irons run 6, 7, 8, 9, pitching wedge and sand wedge. Peripheral weighting moves mass to the edges of the head, which is the main reason cavity-back irons are more forgiving than blades. The putter shaft length is not listed on the MacGregor page.

How it compares

The MacGregor MacBLK Golf Clubs Package Set costs $150 more and adds a 3-wood, a 5-iron and a CNC milled putter, plus flex and length options. The Callaway Strata 12-Piece Men’s Complete Set costs $499.99 and comes from a larger brand, but it has no sand wedge. Choose the CG4000 if price matters most.

Good to know

The right-handed set comes with graphite shafts in the woods and a choice of steel or graphite in the irons. The graphite and steel version is $349.99, and the all-graphite version costs more. A left-handed version and a ladies version are sold separately on the MacGregor site. Shipping is free on US orders over $75.
