Callaway Strata 12-Piece Men’s Complete Set

The Callaway Strata 12-piece set is a simple men’s starter set with a 460cc driver, a 3-wood, a hybrid, five irons, a blade putter and a stand bag for $499.99.

Why it made the list

Strata is Callaway’s entry line, and this is the smallest men’s set in it. You get nine clubs, a stand bag and headcovers, which adds up to the 12 pieces in the name. That is enough to play a full round and learn every type of shot without paying for clubs you won’t use yet.

The set comes from a major brand at a price most new golfers can live with. Callaway lists it at $499.99 and backs its products for two years. Golf Monthly named a men’s Strata set its best set choice and liked the high-launching driver and irons and the light, roomy bag.

What it does well

• The 460cc driver head is the largest size the rules allow, with a bigger sweet spot for off-center hits
• The 5-hybrid at 26 degrees takes the place of a long iron, which most beginners find hard to hit
• The irons use perimeter weighting and a progressive sole width to help with control
• The blade putter has an alignment line to help you aim
• The stand bag is light and has 5 pockets and a back strap for carrying

The mix is what makes it work for a new player. Graphite shafts in the woods help you swing faster, and steel shafts in the irons keep them steady.

Who it’s for

The Strata 12-piece suits adult men who are new to golf and want one box from a brand they know. It also works for returning golfers and as a gift. The Regular flex fits average swing speeds.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you already swing fast or want stiff shafts, since the set only comes in Regular flex. It has no sand wedge, so if you play courses with a lot of bunkers you may want the Strata Plus 14-piece instead.

Key specs, explained

The driver has 10.5 degrees of loft and a 45-inch shaft. That loft is a common choice for new players because it helps the ball get up. The 3-wood has 15.5 degrees of loft for long shots from the fairway or the tee on tight holes. The hybrid is 26 degrees, so it fills the distance where a 4 or 5-iron would go.

The irons run from 6 to 9 plus a pitching wedge at 44 degrees, with lofts set 4 degrees apart. The putter has 3 degrees of loft and a standard 35-inch length.

How it compares

The Callaway Men’s XR 13-Piece Complete Set costs three times as much. It adds a fourth hybrid, three wedges and an Odyssey putter, and it feels closer to clubs you would buy one at a time. If you are not sure how often you will play, the Strata is the safer start. If you want a budget set with a sand wedge, the MacGregor CG4000 Men’s Package Set with Stand Bag costs less and goes from 6-iron to sand wedge.

Good to know

Callaway sells this set in right and left-handed versions, in Black/Blue. The Strata Plus 14-piece adds a sand wedge for $599.99, and the Strata Ultimate 16-piece adds more clubs on top of that. Because the set has nine clubs, you can add up to five more and still stay under the 14-club limit.

Questions about the Callaway Strata 12-piece

How many clubs come in the Strata 12-piece set?

Nine clubs come in the set. The other pieces are the stand bag and headcovers.

Does the Strata 12-piece include a sand wedge?

No, it stops at the pitching wedge. You can add a sand wedge later, or buy the Strata Plus 14-piece, which includes one.

Is the Strata 12-piece good for beginners?

Yes, it is built for new golfers. The large driver head, the hybrid and the perimeter-weighted irons all help the ball get airborne and keep mishits in play.
