The verdict

Why it made the cut

The PING s259 is a cast wedge with six sole grinds, loft-specific grooves and a straighter leading edge in its lower lofts, so your gap wedge blends in with your irons.

Why it made the list

The jump from a pitching wedge to a gap wedge can look odd at address if the shapes don’t match. PING shapes the 46° to 50° s259 wedges with a straighter leading edge and a lower, more centered center of gravity, so they sit and play more like irons. As the loft goes up, the design changes. The 50° to 54° wedges have a higher center of gravity for distance control on partial swings, and the 56° to 62° wedges get more offset and a smaller hosel for a more comfortable look on finesse shots.

Golf Digest gave the s259 a 4.5 score and a Gold medal on its 2026 Hot List, and listed it in the top 5 for performance among low handicappers.

What it does well

  • Blends with iron sets thanks to a straighter leading edge in the 46° to 50° lofts
  • Changes groove shape by loft, with tight MicroMax grooves from 54° to 62°
  • Offers six grinds and 25 loft and grind combinations from 46° to 62°
  • Uses a larger elastomer insert behind the face to improve feel and sound

The lower lofts use grooves with a 20 degree sidewall to add volume for full shots. The higher lofts pack in more grooves for spin around the green. A face blast adds friction on top of that.

Who it’s for

Buy it if you play PING irons or any set with a fairly straight leading edge and want a gap wedge that looks like part of the set. It also suits golfers who want a 62° lob wedge. Better players may like it most, since Golf Digest’s top 5 result came in its low handicap group.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you want a forged head. The s259 is investment cast from 8620 carbon steel. Skip it too if you want a cavity-back look. Golfers who need the most forgiveness may prefer the Cleveland CBZ.

Key specs, explained

The six grinds are S, W, H, E, T and B. The S grind covers every loft from 46° to 60° with 10° or 12° of bounce. The W grind has 14° of bounce for steeper swings, and now comes in 50° and 52° too. The T grind has 6° of bounce and a steeper trail edge, so the face sits low when you open it. The E grind was reshaped to look more familiar at address while keeping its strong sand play. The stock steel shaft is the PING Z-Z115 (115 grams), with a PING Alta CB graphite option (82 grams), and the stock grip is the PING Dylawedge.

How it compares

The Titleist Vokey Design SM11 Wedge (Tour Chrome) also has six grinds and adds a 44° option, but tops out at 60°. The Cleveland RTZ 2 Wedge (Tour Satin) goes up to 64°. Choose the s259 if a smooth handoff from your irons to your wedges matters most.

Good to know

Golf Discount sells the s259 for $197 with a steel shaft, below the $218 list price Golf Digest shows. Some builds, including graphite, are $213. You can pick a standard or upright lie (Black Dot or Blue Dot) and a standard or +1 inch length. A darker Midnight finish is also sold. PING’s WebFit Wedge app helps you narrow down grinds.
